A category and posts associated with it are no longer relevant or outdated
Sometimes, categories may overlap or duplicate each other, causing confusion.
Or you might want to reorganize the structure of the blog and want to clean up some categories
The reason could be anything, but WordPress makes it easy for us to delete a category.
Come on, let’s try deleting a category
Go to the “Categories” screen.
Hover your cursor over the category that you want to delete.
Click on the “Delete” link to remove the category permanently.
💡
Remember, deleted categories won’t be sent to the trash. They will be deleted permanently with no way of restoring them.
This is why WordPress asks for double confirmation before deleting a category.
Consequences of deleting a category

Luckily, posts associated with the category won’t get deleted when a category is deleted.
But WordPress deletes the archive page of the category automatically. Because of this, if the archive page receives any search engine traffic, you’ll lose it.
So, deleting a category is not without its negative consequences.
💡
If you delete a category with sub-categories, the sub-categories will not get deleted automatically.
Once the parent category is deleted, the sub-categories will become parent-level categories and independent.
