In this lesson, I want to answer a few burning questions my clients ask me regularly.

Should I plan categories upfront before producing any content for my blog?

Tags could be added without much planning because they depend on the information you provide in each post.

But it is recommended to plan the blog’s categories upfront because it clarifies what content you want to post inside your blog.

This means it also helps you prepare a publishing calendar.

Having said that, it also depends on individual circumstances and preferences.

Some successful bloggers I know started their blogs with a few broad categories and refined them as they developed their content strategy.

They do this because they love creating content and categorizing it based on their audience’s interests.

So, there is no silver bullet when it comes to planning the categories of your blog.

💡
But if you notice, the standard recommendation in both scenarios is to get started with the broad categories at least.

Next question…

Is creating sub-categories mandatory?

Nope!

Sub-categories are only necessary for blogs that cover many broad topics.

You don’t have to if you feel it doesn’t make sense to create sub-categories.

You can manage your blog with Top-level categories only.

One final question…

Can I add categories or tags to a blog post after publishing it?

Of course!

You can add them while creating the blog post or after publishing it (even after one year).

Simply put, there are no time frame limitations regarding when you should organize your blog posts.

For our blog, I don’t want to make things complicated.

So, I will start with a few broad categories and think about sub-categories only if it becomes necessary in the future.

Here are the three primary categories that I came up with for our blog:

  1. Accounting
  2. Invoicing
  3. Financing

And I will show you how to add these categories in the next lesson.
